And even more exciting? Sunday Favorites are back! I am so thrilled that for this summer season our Sunday Favorites will feature our very first guest fashionista writing for us! Nadja is my summer intern, and currently a college student who is majoring in Fashion Merchandising. I am so thrilled to have her work with me this summer, and share all her talents as she just returned from studying abroad in Italy! Welcome Nadja!

“I try to keep my eye on the latest trends, because it is important for me to keep track of what’s current in the fashion world. Working at Nordstrom has also allowed me to identify new styles for the upcoming season. Using my own personal style knowledge,  I can help assist my clients discover new pieces and trends to try. And now I want to share some of my favorites with you.

I’ve gained a new respect and love for dresses as my own personal style has developed, and my favorite for this season is a simple strappy summer dress. These have just the right amount of cool for that fun-loving summer vibe just perfect for any outdoor occasion. Hope you enjoy!”

Ah, summer! Time to rest, relax, read, and…reinvent! Now that summer is in full swing and I have taken the time to digest the school year (my teaching year, that is!), I am happy that I’m starting to envision (albeit, slowly) the “what comes next” moments of my life. I’ve been away a bit more than I’d like from this space, but for good reason. I wanted to ensure what I really wanted to say and share in this space; to make it a valuable place of my time to create, and more importantly a value to you to visit. I have loved every minute of it, and I look forward to doing it everyday! I hope in the coming months you’ll see more of that, and as always I thank you for joining the journey.

This Season's Gold // Moments in Dress with stripes and pockets

I was so excited to dress up (what mom doesn’t when it’s a grown-up night’s out?) when my husband said that we had a black tie dinner to attend. I immediately knew that I wanted to wear color. It’s my go-to for most of my looks, especially events. However, I couldn’t help but find this gem in a last minute attempt to get something new to wear (there’s always something about getting dressed up that makes you think you need something new, am I right?).

I found it at Nordstrom and there were clearly two things that made it immediately perfect to wear – stripes and pockets! And I can tell you first hand that a gown with pockets is a girl’s best friend! My pockets even became topic of conversation from the ladies who saw me pull out my cell phone from my dress, which I found very funny. I kept the rest of the look simple with dainty accessories and a pop of red on my nails and lips (I am obsessed with this matte lip color!).

Summer Planning // 5 Things to Know for Disney World

Disney Magic Kingdom - Cinderella's Castle

Happy Memorial Day Monday! I’ve been away for a bit facing some unexpected challenges that life decided to throw my way. I’ll share more soon, but right now all I can think about is getting ready for summer and enjoying time away with my family! Summer planning is always fun, and awhile back we were able to take a little “pre-summer break” vacay and escape to sunny Florida! One of my favorite places to enjoy for a short getaway is Disney World. It’s one of my earliest travel memories and to this very day, I cannot get enough of the excitement I feel from planning a visit and getting up extra early just to get there. I remember not being able to wait to take my son when he was born. We’ve been several times now, and yet there is always something new to discover and enjoy when we arrive. (P.S. If you’re trying to figure out the best time to go during the year, check out this “crowd calendar“)

Disney World Magic Kingdom Entrance

Disney Magic Kingdom Rollercoaster Big Thunder Mountain Coincidently, this trip to Disney also happened to fall on Mr. E’s birthday, and I think I was more excited than he was. Ha! It was a last minute trip (reducing our hotel options), and while we had a place to stay with family, we booked a one night stay at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. The basic rooms are relatively small, but were perfect enough for a one night stay. And one of the bonuses of staying on the property was the extra two hours of Disney magic we got to enjoy as part of their weekly Magic Hours for guests of any of the Disney properties. (Just do some research as to which park-Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios- are holding the extra hours in advance as they change weekly.)

Family Fun at Disney World with Minnie

  1. 180 Days – That’s how early in advance you should (and can!) book a breakfast, lunch or dinner at any of the upscale places to eat on the property (Cinderella’s Castle, Be Our Guest, and one of the best places to watch the fireworks, Wishes Dessert Party) And if you book breakfast at Cinderella’s Castle, you might even get in to the park earlier than everyone else!
  2. Magic Bands – The key to pretty much everything! It’s your hotel room key, your wallet (holds credit card info), your tickets to enter the park, your FastPass (get the APP!) to 3 rides in advance BEFORE arriving, your pictures with all the characters…even your meal plan. It’s kept secure and has a unique ID chip that you use your thumbprint to identify you to the band. You can order these ahead of time and get them personalized with your name as well!
  3. Early Birds get the worms – Yup! If you’re only going to spend a day at Magic Kingdom (we did this time around), you might as well plan to sacrifice the early wake up to enjoy the character greetings and pictures that look like you’re the only ones at the happiest place on Earth!
  4. Ways to Save – Your everyday dollar store is a great place for some of the basic things you should take in with you into the parks at Disney so you don’t have to worry about spending for the unexpected while you’re there.
    1. Ponchos for Florida’s intermittent rain showers
    2. Glow in the dark glow sticks/bracelets so you don’t feel guilty when the overpriced glowing sparkly cart comes around right before Electric Parade.
    3. Have the kids were their swim shorts (for whatever reason you can possibly think of!)
    4. Make a trail mix ahead of time and pack into small snack baggies.
  5. Have Fun – You might not make it to every ride you want in just one day, but here are a few options for making it to as many as possible, and which we think (as my 6 year old suggests) are the best in order (in other words, get FastPass for the first 3):
    1. Mining Train (recently newer rollercoaster)
    2. Peter Pan’s Flight (colorful, glow in the dark)
    3. Splash Mountain (this is where you use your ponchos.)
    4. Thunder Mountain (fake TNT!-he wrote this as a precaution to all my readers)

Summer on the Cape :: Beach Looks in Purple and Gold

summer on the beach

Happy Thursday! This week has been loaded with much to do and learn, and returning to teach for my 11th school year has been an enlightening experience in more ways than one (more of that throughout the year!). But for a few more days, my mind is happily still recalling my travels to the beaches of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Mr. E and I have enjoyed the gorgeous beaches and small town communities of Cape Cod for several years now. Traveling there every summer only became much more exciting when we had our son and were able to enjoy watching him make the best of our family of 3 getaway. This time last year, I remember thinking and planning ahead about what it would’ve meant to have a 7 month old and my almost six year old vacationing on the Cape, so it was inevitable that I would find moments where it was a bit difficult to find joy. But because of my family and much needed time away, I did . I’m sharing two looks on the beach in purple and gold today, and I hope you enjoy!

To feel my best on the beaches this summer after having a baby sometimes felt like a challenge, but I honestly embraced it for what it was (especially given my situation!), and decided to do my best to feel comfortable and just be reflective and look bright while sitting along the shore!

Red beach hat

Red beach hat

Being along the water can be healing, so I took advantage of many quiet moments to feel connected to my thoughts and find strength. Wearing bright colors that complimented the blue waters of the ocean made what could have been time spent feeling somber into a more positive experience and honestly, simply brighter. I love how a simple red hat served it’s purpose both for fashion and function on a hot day!

imageIf there is any accessory that rivals my love for shoes, it is a hat (clearly evident here and here)! For women, a hat is a great statement piece that brings all the elements of shape and design in your outfit together, particularly when wearing the right hat that frames the face and doesn’t overwhelm the size of the head (the crown, if you will).

gold bathing suitFinding a gold bathing suit for this summer wasn’t intentional, but when I saw this gold swimsuit from J. Crew, I knew I wanted to wear it. It was my way of acknowledging the color’s deeper meaning for me while on the beach. Taking the time to really open my heart and accept my “new normal” while on vacation truly had an impact on how I prioritize things in my life. The importance of family and truly living to the fullest extent possible took on a new meaning, and I enjoyed making that understanding a reality every day since then.

Gold stripe seabag

Beach cover-ups are my new favorite thing to find and style with my bathing suits. Preparing for a trip earlier this year to Hawaii, I discovered so many beautiful options to wear that make a basic swimsuit on the beach look put together, and so when packing for my trip to the Cape, I organized (and honestly, packed much less as a result!) my swimwear in that way.

Summer Breeze :: Petite in Emerald Dress and Brown Fedora

emerald green long dress

Happy Monday! Being petite can sometimes be a challenge when it comes to finding fashion that suits my frame and height. I end up not buying something I really love or dive in and purchase it to only bring it straight to a tailor before the tags are even torn off. When I do find the perfect dress for my size, I can’t help but buying it in different colors. This dress is a great example of a multi-color multi-purchase! I love this dress in black as well (in one of my top posts here), and I was thrilled to find this emerald green, which happens to be one of my favorite colors.

green long dress

Not only is this emerald dress comfortable to wear on a breezy summer day, but it happens to be the perfect length for me to wear with flats. I spent the day walking through a street festival and enjoying the sunshine by the water, so this was a great outfit to transition between being out with my family during the day and later going out that evening. I kept it casual styling it with a pair of beaded flats and studded belt.

Summer has been a joy and equally a challenge on days when I think back to where I was just a year ago; pregnant and happy just having learned that I was about to have a daughter. I often think about how sick I felt, and while I remember feeling miserable on hot days, I do recall being excited to prepare to tell my son about having a sister and how we would react.

woman's brown fedora

green and brown outfitThe fact that I am now spending this summer dressing without a growing belly and not feeling sick brings up mixed feelings, so I do my best to live in the moment and basque in the joy of my son’s smiling face as he enjoys summer with me and not worrying about his mommy’s nausea, as he did this time last year.
