A little over a month ago, I was so honored to have been able to host a style event at one of my favorite places to shop, J.Crew! If someone told me years ago that I would be “playing” a J.Crew Stylist offering style advice and blogging about fashion and travel and opening up my life in public, I would have easily rejected the notion. While I’ve always enjoyed taking my friends shopping (sometimes at their request!) to help them pick out looks or poured over fashion magazines most of my life, I wouldn’t have thought I’d do that with more than just those circle of friends.
What a joy to be able to see people happy when they feel good in the right clothes that make them feel more special than they already are! J.Crew is such a great place to not only find some classic pieces, but also find a few edgy styles that give you the chance to go beyond your work week boundaries of dressing. A bit more color or a mix of patterns is always fun way to experiment with your style. For my style event, I chose to wear a bright and bold yellow off the shoulder top (they have it in stripes too!)and finish the ensemble with a ripped edged denim pencil skirt. Wedges completed the look and kept me comfortable while still giving me height for the fun evening!
Hope you enjoy! I look forward to hosting a few more style events in the upcoming seasons! Stay tuned! Here are some of my current favorites at J.Crew and J.Crew Factory! They are currently having an Extra 50% off sale items with code 48HOURS.
Happy Sunday! This week has been filled with many emotions for me. As a wife, mother, and teacher, I strive to show my son the best of what the world has to offer, and sometimes shield him from the “bad stuff” in the world. For a 6 year old, I find it a challenge to share all that is bad in the world, and then I also know he needs to understand the reality he is going to face as he grows up. At this time, I’m leaving that for another post.
I’ve recently been watching this documentary-style show called States of Undress, and it has truly opened my eyes to how fashion is more than just clothes and well-organized ensembles (I knew it, but it’s nice to confirm it!), but a statement about culture and the civil liberties some around the world strive so hard to achieve. It made me think about what it means to share fashion in this forum weekly with you because very much like the theatre world that I love so much, fashion time-stamps our moments in history and is the evidence we can look upon when we are seeking to understand the state of our world’s past, present and future.
And as promised, Nadja is sharing her take on this summer’s favorite shoe-the wedge-for our Sunday Favorites!
“Wedges are always a great choice if you want to elevate your height and style. Unlike heels, wedges provide more comfort and balance. Summertime is one of the best time to strut in your wedges and show off your cute summer pedicure. Wedges can range in various styles such as: espadrille, wooden wedge or cork wedges. Cute applications to the wedges like ankle straps can transform the shoe from a casual to a much more formal look. If wedges are not in your summer shoe rotation, be sure to snag a pair.”
Are you a fan of wedges? We’d love to know! If you have Snapchat, feel free to share your thoughts with us and follow along @thisseasonsgold! Thanks!
Happy 4th of July weekend for those of you who celebrate! I am so happy to share that we’ve been featured again with IFB and their Links a la Mode. Have you seen our most recent Facebook Live video? It’s gone ever-so-slightly viral. (I think it has to do with how amazing the fashion superhero Robert Verdi is in it! He is such a joy! And even more exciting? Sunday Favorites are back! I am so thrilled that for this summer season our Sunday Favorites will feature our very first guest fashionista writing for us! Nadja is my summer intern, and currently a college student who is majoring in Fashion Merchandising. I am so thrilled to have her work with me this summer, and share all her talents as she just returned from studying abroad in Italy! Welcome Nadja!
“I try to keep my eye on the latest trends, because it is important for me to keep track of what’s current in the fashion world. Working at Nordstrom has also allowed me to identify new styles for the upcoming season. Using my own personal style knowledge, I can help assist my clients discover new pieces and trends to try. And now I want to share some of my favorites with you.
I’ve gained a new respect and love for dresses as my own personal style has developed, and my favorite for this season is a simple strappy summer dress. These have just the right amount of cool for that fun-loving summer vibe just perfect for any outdoor occasion. Hope you enjoy!”
Ah, summer! Time to rest, relax, read, and…reinvent! Now that summer is in full swing and I have taken the time to digest the school year (my teaching year, that is!), I am happy that I’m starting to envision (albeit, slowly) the “what comes next” moments of my life. I’ve been away a bit more than I’d like from this space, but for good reason. I wanted to ensure what I really wanted to say and share in this space; to make it a valuable place of my time to create, and more importantly a value to you to visit. I have loved every minute of it, and I look forward to doing it everyday! I hope in the coming months you’ll see more of that, and as always I thank you for joining the journey.
I was so excited to dress up (what mom doesn’t when it’s a grown-up night’s out?) when my husband said that we had a black tie dinner to attend. I immediately knew that I wanted to wear color. It’s my go-to for most of my looks, especially events. However, I couldn’t help but find this gem in a last minute attempt to get something new to wear (there’s always something about getting dressed up that makes you think you need something new, am I right?).
I found it at Nordstrom and there were clearly two things that made it immediately perfect to wear – stripes and pockets! And I can tell you first hand that a gown with pockets is a girl’s best friend! My pockets even became topic of conversation from the ladies who saw me pull out my cell phone from my dress, which I found very funny. I kept the rest of the look simple with dainty accessories and a pop of red on my nails and lips (I am obsessed with this matte lip color!).
So if you ever find that you need to get dressed up, do yourself a favor and try to score a beautiful gown with a little something extra for comfort.
I’d love to know, what are some of your favorite go-to outfits for special events? Is black the best bet? Share your thoughts in the comments or let me know on Twitter! Thank you for stopping by!
Happy Memorial Day Monday! I’ve been away for a bit facing some unexpected challenges that life decided to throw my way. I’ll share more soon, but right now all I can think about is getting ready for summer and enjoying time away with my family! Summer planning is always fun, and awhile back we were able to take a little “pre-summer break” vacay and escape to sunny Florida! One of my favorite places to enjoy for a short getaway is Disney World. It’s one of my earliest travel memories and to this very day, I cannot get enough of the excitement I feel from planning a visit and getting up extra early just to get there. I remember not being able to wait to take my son when he was born. We’ve been several times now, and yet there is always something new to discover and enjoy when we arrive. (P.S. If you’re trying to figure out the best time to go during the year, check out this “crowd calendar“)
Coincidently, this trip to Disney also happened to fall on Mr. E’s birthday, and I think I was more excited than he was. Ha! It was a last minute trip (reducing our hotel options), and while we had a place to stay with family, we booked a one night stay at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. The basic rooms are relatively small, but were perfect enough for a one night stay. And one of the bonuses of staying on the property was the extra two hours of Disney magic we got to enjoy as part of their weekly Magic Hours for guests of any of the Disney properties. (Just do some research as to which park-Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios- are holding the extra hours in advance as they change weekly.)
180 Days – That’s how early in advance you should (and can!) book a breakfast, lunch or dinner at any of the upscale places to eat on the property (Cinderella’s Castle, Be Our Guest, and one of the best places to watch the fireworks, Wishes Dessert Party) And if you book breakfast at Cinderella’s Castle, you might even get in to the park earlier than everyone else!
Magic Bands – The key to pretty much everything! It’s your hotel room key, your wallet (holds credit card info), your tickets to enter the park, your FastPass (get the APP!) to 3 rides in advance BEFORE arriving, your pictures with all the characters…even your meal plan. It’s kept secure and has a unique ID chip that you use your thumbprint to identify you to the band. You can order these ahead of time and get them personalized with your name as well!
Early Birds get the worms – Yup! If you’re only going to spend a day at Magic Kingdom (we did this time around), you might as well plan to sacrifice the early wake up to enjoy the character greetings and pictures that look like you’re the only ones at the happiest place on Earth!
Ways to Save – Your everyday dollar store is a great place for some of the basic things you should take in with you into the parks at Disney so you don’t have to worry about spending for the unexpected while you’re there.
Ponchos for Florida’s intermittent rain showers
Glow in the dark glow sticks/bracelets so you don’t feel guilty when the overpriced glowing sparkly cart comes around right before Electric Parade.
Have the kids were their swim shorts (for whatever reason you can possibly think of!)
Make a trail mix ahead of time and pack into small snack baggies.
Have Fun – You might not make it to every ride you want in just one day, but here are a few options for making it to as many as possible, and which we think (as my 6 year old suggests) are the best in order (in other words, get FastPass for the first 3):
Mining Train (recently newer rollercoaster)
Peter Pan’s Flight (colorful, glow in the dark)
Splash Mountain (this is where you use your ponchos.)
Thunder Mountain (fake TNT!-he wrote this as a precaution to all my readers)
Wishing you a wonderful Memorial Day! I’m happy to be back sharing with you! Thank you so much for reading and sticking with me!
